It is with profound sadness and immense love we announce the passing of our beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend, Charles Michael Coman, known as Charlie, Chuck and Chuckles. Charlie died on June 15, 2026 at University of Michigan Hospital Palliative Care, Ann Arbor, MI. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Nancy and the dedicated nurses of the Palliative Care Unit of U of M Hospital.
Charlie was born in Wyandotte, Michigan on October 6, 1949 at Wyandotte Hospital to the late Ann (Blaga) Coman Burnham and Charles G. Coman. He graduated from Ecorse High School, Ecorse, Michigan in 1967 and found an intense desire to join the rowing team. During his time at Ferris State College and St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron he studied law enforcement and attained an Associates in Arts Degree in Law Enforcement in 1970. He became an accomplished DJ and assisted law enforcement in various activities. His education continued at Wayne State University and he graduated with a degree in Police Administration in 1973. During those years in the university, his interests grew in wrestling and fencing. He continued his education and training in law enforcement by attending Oakland Police Academy and other opportunities followed with Wayne County, PPCT Management Systems, Michigan Department of State Police.
Charlie married Nancy Marie (Rinna) Coman in 1995 in North Carolina. They both enjoyed traveling to North Carolina to visit his mother and the sites, New York & South Carolina to visit his sister and family, Berea, Kentucky, Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, and throughout Michigan just to mention a few. They both enjoyed interests in books, movies, music, art, white-water rafting and had cats as pets. He enjoyed driving cars and owned a deeply memorable black Monte Carlo in their earlier years while also training in Karate and Aikido. They lived in the Downriver area for many years, and their final residence was decided to be Temperance, Michigan.
Charlie had an extensive career in law enforcement. In 1978, Charlie was hired by Grosse Ile Police Department and held various positions through 2007. Patrolman, Uniform Road Patrol, Undercover Narcotics Investigator, Sergeant – Detective Bureau, and Lieutenant / Supervisor – Uniform Patrol & Defensive Tactics Training. It was written by the public as saying that Charlie took charge and handled problems effectively with a calm, competent, and reassuring manner. After retiring he continued working with the United States Marshals Service, Eastern District, Detroit, Michigan as a District Security Officer / Contractor Part-time at times transporting and security of prisoners. Lastly, he worked at 33rd Judicial Court, Woodhaven, Michigan part-time as a Court Security Officer.
Charlie enjoyed communicating with friends and old classmates on Facebook on a regular basis. He suffered greatly with various co-morbidities, but that did not stop him from associated with those he cared about.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Nancy (Rinna) Coman, sister, JoAnn /Jodee (Coman) Todd and husband, Chuck of Indian Land, SC, Brother-in-laws Tony Rinna and wife, Pamela of Southgate, MI, Joseph Rinna and wife Sheri of Allen Park, MI. He is also survived by nephews, Aaron (Victoria) and David Todd and families. As well as, in-law nephews and nieces and families who regarded him as a loving uncle. His closest friends were a meaningful part of his life and fondness – Debbie Budny, John Monge, Jim Glotfelty, Paul Sward and Ray Beattie. He spent hours on the telephone with them either talking about life, politics, the law. He truly loved them. He also had a sincere fondness for the niece, Stephanie Rinna as she showed him such love and compassion. There is much gratitude to be given to the neighbor women who assisted in helping with so many aspects of his care and welfare – Cathy Deen, Carolyn Sommer, Carol Hoscila, and Jane Nowicki.

and let perpetual light shine upon him.

through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
