Lyle Lawrence Martin was born on September 25, 1934, in Wyandotte, Michigan, to the union of Lawrence and Gertrude (Green) Martin. He passed away on September 15, 2026, just ten days shy of his ninety-second birthday, having lived a long, steady, and deeply rooted life in the community he always called home.
Lyle graduated from Roosevelt High School and went on to technical school, where he learned the trade that would carry him through a remarkable career. He spent twenty-five years as a draftsman at McClouth Steel, working with the precision and patience the job demanded, before transitioning into the role of planner. When he finally retired, he had given forty-three years of dedicated service – a testament to the kind of loyalty and work ethic that defined his generation and, especially, defined him.
Lyle found true love with Dorothy Mae Callahan, and the two were wed. Together they built a full and joyful life, and their union was blessed with six children. Whatever they did, they seemed to do side by side – including bowling, a shared passion that had them participating together in a league for years.
Faith was a constant in Lyle’s life. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Parish in Wyandotte, where he gave freely of his time – volunteering at the church festivals and serving as an usher at Mass. He also took part in the famous Rowing Regatta, another thread connecting him to the traditions of his beloved Downriver community.
Lyle and Dorothy were social people in the best sense, and they were active, enthusiastic members of the Pleasure Club. Through the club they shared countless outings – the annual picnic, bowling events, long evenings of cards, and the simple, irreplaceable pleasure of good company. Those friendships were a source of real happiness for both of them.
A lifelong reader, Lyle rarely let a day pass without the newspaper in his hands. Keeping up on current events mattered to him; he liked knowing what was happening in the world and had opinions worth listening to. He was also a devoted NASCAR fan, making the trip out to the track in Flat Rock and to Michigan International Speedway whenever he could. When the races weren’t on, he could be found cheering for the Red Wings and the Tigers.
More than anything else, though, Lyle loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always there – at the games, at the parties, at the ordinary moments that turn out to matter most. He showed up. And more than a few of them will forever remember the thrill of getting a ride on Grandpa’s scooter, a small act that became a cherished memory for an entire generation of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Gertrude Martin; his siblings, Nancy Affholter and Dale Martin; and his beloved wife, Dorothy Mae Martin.
To cherish his memory he leaves his loving children, Renee (Rick) Gwardinski, Kenneth Martin, Patricia (Scott) Taylor, James (Pamela) Martin, Michael (Christine) Martin, and Diane (Robert) Boydell; his grandchildren, Patrick (Megan) Gwardinski, Joseph (Becca) Burkhead, Lynn Harvey, Kiera (Dave) Kizoff, Daniel (Keri) Martin, Brie (Matthew) Hill, Kyle (Florianne) Martin, Erin (Adam) Cooper, Kerri (Jacob) Prickett, Kayla Martin, and Sara (Daniel) Costenbader; and nineteen loving great-grandchildren.
A devoted husband, a hardworking man, a faithful parishioner, and above all a grandfather who never missed a chance to show up – Lyle leaves behind a family and a community shaped by his steady, generous presence.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen
